Star Wars The Force Awakens sure had a mixed reaction, some people considered even worse than the prequels while others though it was better than Return of the jedi. For me all the first three are an extremely tough act to follow, but still was way ahead the second trilogy; however there was one flaw that even the most forgiving person could agree: It played probably way too safe as the basic structure of the movie was a lot like the first installment. So I was intrigued when J.J. Abrahams announced that they did that way cause considering there was a lot of time between the last release (10 years counting episode 3 to be exact) he felt that was necessary to bring the people who liked the original trilogy, but for the next one they were going to be more different and distinguishable.
The movie starts pretty much exactly where the last one ended with the Resistance being attacked in their base by the First Order as they were going to evacuate and...I though this look so familiar; but then we get what is probably the most dramatic space battle in all the movies.
While Rey is also trying to get Luke to train her much for his dismay, she becomes connected with Kylo Ren and learns more of his past as well as dwelling more into the teachings of the Force, fortunately in a different way we saw in Empire Strikes Back.
Meanwhile as the Resistance discovers that the First Order fleet commanded by Supreme Leader Snoke himself can track them by Lightspeed, and they almost kill Leia by attacking her transport (she survives by using for once the Force) while the rest of the people who accompanied her (including Admiral Ackbar) dies and a new leader is elected: a purple haired lady simply known as Vice Admiral Holdo. but secretly Finn along with new character Rose, BB8 and Poe Dameron come with the plan to infiltrate Snoke's space station to disable that device, and after some information by Maz Kanata, everyone except for Dameron go to planet Canto Bight to find a technician who can help them. This sub plot is for many the low point of the movie while I agree that probably was a bit too long, It was good to the see the contrast of the rich and powerful and the poor people working in the stables, maybe I'm too weak to scenes that just show environment. And I was surprised to see the mechanic expert, mostly because I expected to be Lando, but maybe they are saving him for the next installment...hopefully
The story can be really basic when you think about it, but the constant show that our heroes are having big risks, and moments like Holdo discussing with Dameron which course to take, the hesitation of Luke and Snoke's doubts in Kylo Ren make the movie work.
I was eager to see the villains in this movie as all the important ones (General Hux, Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren) survived and I wasn't disappointed. I loved seeing all the red guards in action and how far did Kylo Ren went, as he even killed his master and took the entire leadership of The First Order, while it was a real bold and unexpected move, this had one problem for me: we didn't learn who was he, and it would have been great to learn his backstory by his own mouth. We finally see in action Phasma as she fights with Finn, for a few moments but I take her death over Boba Fett's anyday
I was pleased that Luke didn't want to train Rey and that he didn't helped at the end by coming to the battle himself but using a Force projection as he had very good reasons to hesitate, including knowing that the Jedi in the Old Republic were incompetent and corrupt which means direct reference to the second trilogy, while I can like this idea(seriously, when I rewatched it, Emperor Palpatine probably did the Galaxy a favor by eradicating them), this angers me as those movies created big plot holes with the Originals.
One question in particular I really looked forward was to learn why is Rey so powerful and...we learned in way I didn't expected, during the movie Luke explains that the Force isn't just a power that the jedi use, but something that is present in all living things, and in the last shot we see one kid use it to grab a broomstick. Which made me think: Some people just born with more power, that may sound a bit rushed, and probably is, but considering how Obi-Wan explained how Anakin Skywalker was just a pilot that had a strong Force concentration in Return of the Jedi, I think that was actually the whole idea in the original trilogy of how it works. Also, good thing neither Han or Luke were her father. Hopefully the next movie will answer the important remaining questions, or else...this trilogy won't stand very well the test of time.
This movie really didn't play safe, it really took risks by showing new ways the Force could be used, the Light Speed attack courtesy of Holdo, kills 2 characters from the original movies and even the surviving pilots from the Force Awakens (except Poe Dameron, of course), the new planets were actually very different; and even Ahchh-To with the lizard nuns village, the porgs and all the Jedi lore (including Yoda appearing as a Force ghost using the same puppet and voice actor), though I can live without the milking dino-whale alien thingy. I was worried planet Crait was shown in the trailer cause it looked a bit snowy and it was so good to learn it was salt from various minerals, which prove that they did a big effort into making new things.

Happy New Year and may the Force be with you.

The Last Jedi broke my heart because of the ending. Because I hate that Rian chose to kill off Luke. I will always believe that it was way too soon to do that and it wasn't necessary. The movie would have been so much better if Luke wasn't killed off. What Rian did is a complete travesty! That's how I feel and I have something else to say. I have a right to express my criticism.

What happened in TLJ has now caused me to become very doubtful of this second trilogy. It caused me to lose some of my faith. And I mean WTF? Kathleen Kennedy said to George Lucas in an interview that she will protect his characters. It turns out that she lied to him. She dishonored her word! I hate when people lie to others! Lying only causes people to become bitter and to lose their respect towards the ones they easily trusted. I blame both her and Rian Johnson.

Also, Mark Hamill himself isn't happy with the ending of TLJ. He didn't know the whole time that they killed off the character he plays. They directly back stabbed him! They tricked him! I feel sorry for him. In fact, I feel very horrible for him. I don't give a shit how old he is. He's not that old! It's still no excuse to kill off a huge important character. Especially since Luke is one of the most favorable characters.

I'm sorry to sound so negative Ruyc. But I honestly don't feel like taking back my criticism. Anyway, I wish you a Happy New Year and may the Force be with you. Hopefully there will be something fun to do to get rid of these depressing things.
